Snowbird departure checklist

Everything to do before you leave your Québec home for the winter. Print it, tick it off, leave with peace of mind.

Insurance and paperwork

  • Call your home insurer and get its conditions for an empty house in writing (inspection frequency, heat, water).
  • Write down your policy number and the insurer's 24-hour claims line.
  • Give your emergency contact's name to your insurer and alarm company.
  • Arrange mail forwarding or a mail hold with Canada Post.
  • Buy travel health insurance for your full stay in the U.S.
  • Check the RAMQ rules on time spent outside Québec.
  • Tell your bank and credit card companies your travel dates.

Water and heat

  • Shut off the main water valve.
  • Drain and shut off outdoor faucets.
  • Keep the heat on at a safe level. Never turn it off completely.
  • Install a water leak detector and a low-temperature alert that notify your phone.
  • Confirm fuel or propane deliveries if you heat with them.

Inside the house

  • Empty or clean the fridge, or leave it running with the door closed.
  • Unplug small appliances and electronics.
  • Put a few lights on timers.
  • Take out the trash and recycling, and leave no food out.

Outside

  • Confirm your snow removal contract, including the walkway and entrance.
  • Clean the gutters.
  • Store patio furniture, the barbecue and garden hoses.
  • Adjust the insurance on any car you leave behind.

Security

  • Test your cameras from your phone before you leave.
  • Give your keys and alarm code to one trusted contact.
  • Lock every window and door, including the garage and basement.
  • Don't post your travel dates on social media.

Before you come back

  • Ask someone to turn the water back on and check for leaks.
  • Have the house warmed up before you arrive.
  • Ask for a last visit report the week before your return.
